Have you ever been ghosted 👻
The Candidate Ghosting Problem: How AI Can Help Recruiters Close the Communication Gap
You interviewed for the job.
The conversation went well. The recruiter said the team would be in touch soon.
And then?
Nothing.
No update. No rejection. No explanation.
For candidates, this experience has become frustratingly familiar.
Greenhouse's 2024 State of Job Hunting research found that 61% of job seekers reported being ghosted after a job interview.
Candidate experience research from Criteria found a similar communication problem from another angle: 38% of candidates reported being ghosted by an employer within the previous year, and 34% considered themselves ghosted after only one week without communication.
Ghosting isn't simply an uncomfortable moment in the recruiting process.
It's a workflow problem.
Recruiters Aren't Usually Trying to Ghost Candidates
I've spent more than a decade working in recruiting, and I don't believe most recruiters wake up and decide they're going to ignore candidates.
Recruiting teams are managing:
Hiring managers
Interviews
Scheduling
Candidate pipelines
Offer processes
Sourcing
Internal meetings
ATS updates
Hundreds — and sometimes thousands — of applicants
Now AI has added another dynamic.
AI tools have made it easier for candidates to find and apply for jobs at scale. Greenhouse reported that 38% of job seekers were mass applying to roles, while its internal data showed recruiter workload increasing 26% in a single quarter.
The result can be a communication breakdown.
A recruiter intends to follow up.
Another meeting happens.
A hiring manager hasn't provided feedback.
The role gets put on hold.
Another candidate enters the process.
Three days become seven.
Seven become fourteen.
And the candidate hears nothing.
We Can Use AI Differently
Much of the conversation about AI in recruiting focuses on efficiency:
How quickly can we source candidates?
How quickly can we screen resumes?
How many applications can we process?
How much recruiter time can we save?
Those are valid questions.
But there's another question we should be asking:
Can AI help us create a better experience for candidates?
I believe it can.
AI can help recruiters identify candidates who are waiting for updates, organize follow-up queues, draft personalized communications, summarize hiring-manager feedback and remind recruiters when communication has gone quiet.
The recruiter still owns the relationship.
AI simply helps make sure the relationship doesn't disappear underneath the workload.
Automation Doesn't Have to Mean Impersonal
There is an important distinction between automating communication and automating relationships.
Candidates don't necessarily need a recruiter to personally write every administrative message from scratch.
They need to know what's happening.
Even a simple update can make a difference:
"We're still completing interviews and expect to have another update for you next week."
That takes seconds to review and send when technology helps surface who needs an update.
CareerPlug recommends automated candidate communication as one way employers can keep candidates engaged and reduce ghosting throughout the hiring process.
Technology can handle the reminder.
AI can help draft the message.
The human recruiter remains responsible for the relationship.
Candidate Experience Has Long-Term Value
Closing the loop isn't only about being polite.
Candidates remember how companies treat them.
Greenhouse's Candidate Experience research found that 79% of candidates would consider reapplying to a company if they received feedback after interviewing but weren't ultimately hired.
Think about what that means for talent acquisition.
Today's rejected candidate could be:
Tomorrow's perfect candidate
A future customer
A referral source
A future employee
Someone who recommends — or discourages — others from applying
Candidate communication is part of employer brand.
That's Why I Built GhosterBuster
I started building AI recruiting tools around a simple idea:
AI shouldn't only help companies process candidates. It should help companies treat candidates better.
GhosterBuster is one of those tools.
It's designed to help recruiting teams identify candidates who need communication and make follow-up easier before someone falls through the cracks.
The goal isn't to replace recruiters.
It's to remove one of the easiest ways for a good candidate experience to become a bad one:
Silence.
Because candidates shouldn't need to wonder whether they're still being considered.
And recruiters shouldn't have to rely entirely on memory to make sure every candidate gets an answer.
AI can help us do both better.
